In this exclusive masterclass, you’ll explore creative techniques for filming fluid motion, gain insight into the technical aspects of camera work, and discover how to blend choreography with powerful visual storytelling to create compelling dance films. Canon and Cinedans are inviting the renowned film director Tommy Pascal to share his expertise in a comprehensive masterclass. He will cover key topics such as camera techniques, integrating choreography into film, and bring about creative solutions for capturing dance on film. Drawing from his own professional practices, he will offer valuable insights, along with practical tips and tricks. Dancers and choreographers will have the opportunity to apply their newly learned skills in a hands-on assignment led by Pascal. Additionally, Canon experts will be on-site to guide participants through the latest Canon filming equipment, offering professional advice on how to maximize the potential of their gear.
Prerequisites:
Choreographers and dancers are invited to sign up, who are interested in filming movement and want to improve their filmmaking skills for creating dancefilms.
A basic knowledge of camera use and acquaintance with editing programs is required.
- Basic knowledge of how to use a film camera
- Basic film skills
- Familiarity with editing software will be an advantage, as it will help you apply your filmmaking ideas more effectively.

Masterclass leader:
Tommy Pascal, a former dancer with the Béjart Ballet Lausanne and Ballet Preljocaj, transitioned from the stage to filmmaking in 2007. Since then, he has become one of the leading directors in the field of dance cinema. Tommy has worked on films for renowned choreographers such as Mats Ek, Alexander Ekman, Marco Goecke, Paul Lightfoot & Sol Léon, Ohad Naharin, and Crystal Pite. His live film recordings have been showcased at prestigious venues including the Paris Opera, Nederlands Dans Theater, Stockholm, Oslo & Göteborg Opera, Théâtre de la Ville, Théâtre National de Chaillot, Lyon Opera, 104 Paris, and Orsolina28. Tommy’s latest feature film, Seasons of Dance, will premiere at Cinedans FEST ’25, offering a stunning display of his ability to capture the essence of dance on screen.
