In collaboration with SNDO - School for New Dance Development, we present a selection of three videos honoring artist and educator Ria Higler: 

Crying | 13'

Between rocks at the seashore of Indonesia, Ria Higler, one of the longest-standing and profoundly impactful educators of SNDO, begins a practice of crying.

There is a concentration and devotion to her tears. While she dives into the emotion, exploring the internal energy and the outwards expression, she does not shy away from assuming and experiencing the feelings and forms crying holds. But then again, we see her stepping out of it as simply as she started.

Ria Higler can be considered a ‘mother-spirit’ of SNDO. Since 1980, she became a teacher and mentor in the school, offering to students technical training for the energetic potential and capacities of the body’s movement.

Body & Voice | 6'

Ria Higler worked very regularly with the voice in her practice on stage and in the studio, revealing and opening up spaces in her body and the surrounding. In this video excerpt from a performance she did during a workshop with Marina Abramovic, you can see how she engages the body, exploring the limits of her voice as an instrument of movement.
