PROFFESIONAL PROGRAM EVENTS:

Panel discussion: Future of the Dance film festivals

In 2024 Cinedans FEST celebrates the 20th edition! Since 2003 Cinedans has contributed to the dance film community in the Netherlands and worldwide with its four pillars – FEST, WEB, LAB and TOUR. Now is the time to get together and to reflect on the process, outcomes and prospects of dance film festivals.

As a part of the professional program this panel will be open to industry representatives only. We create an intimate and honest discussion in the format of a round table with special guests, and an open microphone for the industry audience to join the conversation or comment on any of the questions

Cinedans TOUR brings dance films all around the world. Collaborating with several festivals, including; ‘Choreoscope’ in Barcelona, ‘Dance on Screen’ Switzerland, ‘Jumping Frames’ Hong Kong, 'ScreenDance Miami Festival' and ‘ZED’ in Bologna. We exchange and curate programs together, share networks and, in some cases, our database. In this screening a number of films will be shown from the festivals above. Afterwards we will discuss with Andrea Boll (Dance on Screen), Elysa Wendi (Jumping Frames) and Pioneer Winter (ScreenDance Miami) their specific working methods, focus, and different ways of collaborating in the sector.

This presentation and discussion is devoted to the exciting and urgent issue: How can we successfully develop and realise collaborative projects on an international level?

Are you a maker or producer and would you like to broaden your network, receive feedback on initial plans or are you looking for international partners? Then sign up for the one-on-one expert meetings. Eight experts from the broad international dance field will talk to you and help you to move forward.

Dance films are language no problem and offer opportunities for online programming, international audience development and visibility throughout the year. A match made in heaven! But not all glitter is gold. How do you deal with revenues? How do you define the returns? What value can you create in terms of artistic content? And how do you organize the workflow? We dive into the digital realm and talk about the pros and cons of the online world and how to develop an appropriate strategy.

As usual Cinedans organises a delightful breakfast for professionals: filmmakers, producers, programmers and creatives. In an informal setting, participants can get to know each other, catch up and exchange ideas.

Celia Rowlson-Hall (US) is a multidisciplinary artist who mixes storytelling, modern dance and film, creating a genre all her own. She began her career as a professional dancer, but soon switched to choreographing for film and television. Celia Rowlson - Hall is an award-winning artist who works in both the commercial and art fields and has won several international awards, including one at the Venice Film Festival.  She has worked for Netflix, HBO and created choreography for artists such as Alicia Keys, Coldplay and many others. Her 2022 film installation First Snow was named the largest digital installation in the world by Times Square Arts. Currently Celia is working on her second feature film. She will reveal her unique working methods and experiences in a Masterclass. We will also present some exceptional films from her rich oeuvre.

The Moving Media LAB is an initiative of Cinedans in collaboration with Dutch Dance Days, Korzo, Dance Brabant, Eye Film Museum, Beam Lab, VR Days, Design Academy Eindhoven, Universities of Utrecht and Leiden, Fashion Clash and The Fabricant. The Lab explores the possibilities of dance, body and movement within the arts, design practice and science, and investigates how these different fields can become more connected and related to technological innovation. At a special lunch we present the project and introduce you to the artists and their research.

Albert Meijer, Advisor Culture of Creative Europe Desk at Dutch Culture, will talk about the opportunities and conditions in Creative Europe that are relevant to our interdisciplinary work field. The Creative Europe Desk provides advice on the Creative Europe program's grant schemes and offers guidance on making an application. The Creative Europe Desk maintains close contacts with the central organisation of the Creative Europe program in Brussels and with the Creative Europe Desks in the other Member States.

The discussion will be moderated by Linda Thoen, a founder of Curio: curiosity towards change. Throughout her career, Linda has demonstrated a passion for leveraging technology to enhance cultural participation and engagement. Her diverse experiences from being an adviser on digital transformation for the cultural sector to implementation manager of software and marketing & communications, have equipped her with a holistic understanding of digital transformation and its potential to revolutionize the cultural sector.

As usual Cinedans organises a delightful breakfast for professionals: filmmakers, producers, programmers and creatives. In an informal setting, participants can get to know each other, catch up and exchange ideas.

Kaveh Nabatian presents his approach to filmmaking and how to create synergy between the camera and the dancer rather than simply capturing movement — looking at the camera as a dancer, not a spectator. He will present and discuss excerpts from various films, including his own, and focus on listening to silence and music, and feeling how editing can shift time. Kaveh Nabatian is an Iranian-Canadian director and musician whose evocative filmmaking has brought stories from the margins of society and across the world: Haiti, Nunavut, New York and beyond. With a restless creative spirit that transcends genre boundaries, Kaveh aspires to make films that have the immediacy of music and the energy and poetry of dance.

At a special lunch we present the project and introduce you to the 14 artists and their research projects.

Every day of the festival there are opportunities to meet professionals in the field. In addition to the official program, there will be Q&A's with the makers after each screening and some artists will present their case scenarios. Through the online environment, everyone who has registered can find each other and connect.

There is always time for a dance! On Saturday night, join us for the Cinedans party at the Eye Arena and get your groove the exciting beats of our DJ!  Come as you are for a dance and celebrate our 20th anniversary with us!

Checkout our complete cinema program and watch the selection of our Internationale shorts competition, featuring the best international dance shorts with new films of among others Alexander Ekman, Jefta van Dinther, Tanin Torabi, Samatha Shay, Alain Lake, Dimitri Sterkens and the Scottish Ballet.

In the Special Breaking the Chains shorts and documentaries are presented with postcolonial themes. From different (historical) perspectives and countries, they portray ancestral rituals, independence struggles, spirituality and how the effects of slavery persist into the present.

Helena Jonsdottir, director of the Physical Cinema Festival in Reykjavik, presents ICELAND IN THE EYE, with a very special selection of films from Iceland.

Don't forget to watch our fresh new Dutch dance films and see how the Netherlands are moving on in the field!

Note that as a professional, you also have free access to our online program until 31 March! Find out about this here: Cinedans WEB Online Festival

Have you ever experienced that there is 'unfortunately' no budget to show your film, despite the fact that the presenting organisation or festival considers the film indispensable for their program? Have you ever experienced finding out that your film was screened completely differently than agreed? Or perhaps it was suddenly projected in a loop without sound in a corridor? Have you been asked to bring in you expertise as a curator of dance films, without being offered a fee? Well, you're not the only one! Under the guidance of 'experience expert' filmmaker & curator Maia Elisabeth Sørensen, we will put our heads together and discuss Terms & Conditions and see whether we can make a fist together!
